Dr. Gayatri Devi and staff at The New York Memory and Health Aging Services
The New York Memory Services provides expert diagnosis and treatment of memory loss in a comforting setting.
Memory loss may result from many causes including soccer and head injuries, menopause, age-related memory loss and
Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Gayatri Devi, the Director, also treats patients with other neurological conditions, with a particular
emphasis on the treatment of migraines and vertigo.

Can memory loss and Alzheimer's disease be a consequence of hydroxychloroquine use?

Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate, sold under the brand name Plaquenil generic, is commonly used to treat autoimmune diseases like sle, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. While it can be highly effective for these conditions, extended use of hydroxychloroquine does carry a rare risk of irreversible retinal damage. More recently, some studies have suggested hydroxychloroquine could also increase the risk of dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and memory loss, though the evidence is not yet conclusive. The proposed mechanism is that buildup of the drug over time could lead to neurotoxicity and damage to neurons. However, many experts argue the benefits of hydroxychloroquine tablets (hcq 200mg) for its intended uses still generally outweigh these potential side effects. More research is needed to definitively determine if and how hydroxychloroquine 400mg contributes to cognitive decline. For now, patients on the drug should have regular vision exams and be monitored for any neurological changes that could signal a need to discontinue treatment.
